hmm - it was so obvious...
I was looking at "printw". The text on that page was run together. Odd,
but my saved page doesn't show that. But I can repeat it by going down
the same path. I went to www.google.com, asked for
"x/open" printw
and got this result:
Searched the web for "x/open" printw. Results 1 - 10 of about 320. 0

I selected the "X/Open Curses Issue 4, Version 2 - Index" link, which took
me to the page which is garbled, e.g.,

But checking, I see the copy of lynx I'm running is against the Debian stable
copy of ncursesw (I'm running on a new install). Comparing with the
non-ncursesw flavor, I don't see the page garbled. So it doesn't appear to be
a lynx bug (perhaps - but the only way I'll find out is to statically link it
against my current ncursesw - I don't recall a fix that applies to POSIX locale
though).
