Do you mean violate the HTTP protocol in the way that IE does?

If the file has come from a server, the file name extension should be
irrelevant; the server is responsible for sending the correct Content
Type information.

Note that nothing in WAVE RIF MONO conflicts with MICROSOFT PCM; .wav
is not a single format but a format for storing multiple formats.  The
RIF refers to the structures used to store the type of the file, not
to the format of the sound data.

Even Microsoft hand off the decision on which codec to use to Media
Player, even though IE has a bad reputation for ignoring declared 
Content Types and making its own guess based on content.
