ok finally (big grin)!!
if TD got the earlier ones, something's wrong around lynx-dev .

ok partly: i get rather garish colors outside X Window, but only b+w inside;
possibly, it's an artifact of the KDE window manager.  anyone have clues?

my other queries still stand.
