(thanks to this group, lynx-dev) I now use the mailer MUTT.
It puts you into your favorite editor, type-in, correct,
etc your email msg.
Then you exit from you chosen editor, and mutt then shows
you the header it will go out with:
subject, from, to, cc, bcc, etc.
If you type "y" (for yes, I suppose), the email is sent.
BUT, if you type the first character of the item-name,
eg s for send, t for to, etc, mutt then gives you the
current line (for that name, eg "to:"), which you
can then append to, or control-u, etc.
Or, you can type in "e", for EDIT, and it re-invokes
your favorite editor again, with your text you entered
sitting there in it.
Would something like this be what you want?
