I put my current patch for pre.4 here:

which incorporates the fix I promised for slang on AIX, as well as a
fix for the --with-charset option reported by Henry Nelson.  I'm
waiting a little for some more feedback, e.g., from Klaus Weide and/or
Kris Kennaway before finishing pre.4 - will check/see if there are other
issues that I should fix myself.
