i can't comment on this bit, tho' someone else might, BUT ...

2.3 goes back to before the Flood or nearly.
goto lynx.browser.org for links to the latest version 2.7.1 ,
in which the problem has very probably been solved.
if you aren't a sysadmin, you can still compile Lynx yourself
in your own directories, with your own personal settings.
come back to lynx-dev with any compiling problems.
