Subject: LYNX-DEV Lynx offline only
I need to find a Lynx-type browser for someone who is using DOS only (no
Windows), and is *not* online; he doesn't even have a modem.
I wanted to set him up with something that would let him look at our
club's web pages even though he's not online.
You can do this. For what you are talking about you probably
want to go with Bobcat so that the package you put together will
run on the widest variety of DOS boxes. I am assuming that you
are giving him the library of club pages, too, and that they
refer to one another by relative URLs.
Note that you may need to distribute and install some networking
routines with the browser to get it to run happily. But you
don't need to have a network or modem. If you only browse local
files the fact that there is not communications for the packet
driver to talk to will never interfere.
It would also be helpful if there were some sort of freeware DOS browser
that I could put on a diskette for people to look at our site with in
case they also are not online.
Here, I assume you mean they have a modem. I think It makes more
sense for you to create an anonymous lynx-using account at your
site and put Kermit or some other comm. program on the floppy.
They will be able to get around your web pages a lot better this
way. I think that you want to plan this to include the 2400 baud
set, and for that you probably want the Lynx at your end of the
modem connection.
