] depends on the version of the kernel. 8-bit controls work properly in
] 1.2.13, but were broken in 2.0.0 (which I'm currently running) by
] someone who added support for UTF-8 w/o going back to check that 8-bit
] controls work (they don't, as far as I can see).
No surprise; _lots_ of things are broken in 2.0.0. Do yourself a favor,
try a more recent kernel. 2.0.27 works well. There were console driver
updates in 2.0.19, but I think 2.0.27 is a much more stable kernel than
2.0.0 due to other fixes and improvements.
2.0.0 is coming up on one year old.
