Details:

contrib/examples/example_app/test.c

I think we need to call netif_set_default(&ppp_netif) when USE_PPP (and
probably when !USE_ETHERNET) in test_netif_init().

Otherwise, it seems to me lwip isn't able to route outcoming packages over PPP
netif (I reiceved no route before this fix).
