Follow-up Comment #1:

I don't think setting the host-side tap configuration is the job of the echop
binary.

You may, for example, want to bridge the tap interface without setting IP
configuration.

What would be ok is a patch for a configurable hook-script path called to
setup the host-side interface just after the tap interface is created.
