Follow-up Comment #8, task #6863 (project lwip): The only idea that I have regarding the preprocessor magic is a) autoconf :-( b) making the user say how much memory is needed for the pools, but that's hard to calculate given it is dependent on alignment and the overflow checks... We could still say we always have 5 pools and their size must always be defined (much like in comment #1 but without al the '#if MEM_POOL_COUNT > X').
