"minimum-distance" did the trick - even with plenty of space and small margins, "basic-distance" did not work on some parts:

I think it might actually be, given page margins. Remember that “basic-distance” is only an ideal distance. The “desire” to bring that distance close to its ideal value competes with other ideal distances on the page. Try “minimum-distance” or “padding” to define a minimum one distance that LilyPond will feel a need to always obey regardless of other constraints.
