There seems something broken on OSX with regards to the assembler and 
.type The configure script should detect this, though. Are you using a 
recent version from CVS? I don't think this is fix is in any of the 
tarballs.

Can you attach the output of ./configure, config.log and Makefile?

In the mean time, I've committed a workaround. Get the latest version from 
CVS, and use --without-assembler.
