can you stat the directory and post the results?
$ stat /home/chrootusers/./home/<user name>
are you sure there is no space or something else in the passwd file? Is
the path on a local disk or NFS share?

this should list home ? and in home you should have the username?

see here you have /home/<user name> in the jail, but in the listing
above you have /<user name> in the jail without the /home
