That was it, I did untar it on a windows machine. Once I untared it on
linux it worked fine.

seems that the first line of the configure script is corrupted. Could it
be that you unzipped the tarball on a windows machine?

To repair it you can delete the file and run 'autoconf' (if you have
autoconf). That will generate a new file.
