Anything to make regex groups more maintainable

awk doesn't support named groups in regex.

But when a regex is very complex and needs to be modified during
software development, it can be a headache to refer to groups by their
indexes as it is currently done in awk.

Is there a way to make regex more maintainable that is similar to
having the support of named groups?
