The part I was missing is that a backgrounded process:

echo bla &

is run in a subshell.

Somehow I managed to miss that information in the "Asynchronous Lists" chapter:

"If a command is terminated by the control operator <ampersand> ( '&' ), the 
shell shall execute the command asynchronously in a >>>subshell<<<."
