i found a historical ticket WRT apparently the same issue - the
original team agreed not to delete any hardware records from the
DB, nor to leave them orphaned - the latter implies to preserve
distros, which have any associated client records

https://h-node.org/issues/view/en/66/5/token

what is the rationale for removing them? - "because theyre old"?
- people may use them yet - IMHO, there no value in removing EOL
distros and no harm retaining them - i would like to see more or
all (not fewer) distros accepted, or to consider no specific
distros at all

i think we all agree that it should be configurable - in that
case, this is a site-specific configuration issue, which need
not occupy the dev list for the upstream software

from the upstream perspective, the best solution is to extract
and abstract distros from the VCS, pushing the hard-coded
keys/constants into admin-configurable files, loaded/parsed at
runtime - the site-specific white-list is irrelevant to the
client, as long as the client recognizes a super-set of distros

for legacy reasons, i would ensure that entries are accepted for
any distro with an existing association to a client hardware
record

as ive suggested before, the simplest solution is to eliminate
the white-list, and accept/categorize all submissions per
kernel, with the distro as purely informative
