Avoid the Chinese usb/serial chips.  They often have wierd bugs.

Here is a real FTDI, with jumpers, 3.3V or 5V, and has the control lines:

Avoid any u-blox GPS less than 8-series.  Something like this is cheap. has
PPS out, and the option for remote antenna:

If you are indoors, your antenna likely  needs to be in a window sill.
