You should never need pip for gpsd.  

I would seriously recommend NOT to install anything with pip.

asciidoc is only for the man pages, so optional.

Did you install pycairo with pip, or from your distro?  It is only
needed for xgps.  So very optional.

Pretty much any desktop distro should have Cairo installed.  If you
are not running a desktop, then no need for pycairo.

Maybe you need a better distro?  It is easy on Raspbian and Gentoo...

When this thread started Rich did not have pycairo, which is optional,
but he had this issue.  So a red herring.
