Yes I think it'll be worthwhile to try the newer version. However since there are other posts on this forum that refer to sending or receiving chinese characters, I think the support is already there.

A further observation is a terminal can clearly detect and display the characters.

you didn't say which gnokii version you are using!

we fixed some encoding/decoding issues in gnokii 0.6.28, try with that
or better use the git version so you can easily get a fix if you found
a bug: www.gnokii.org/git.shtml

all things on the SIM are defined by ETSI standards (for details see
comments in libgnokii code, common/gsm-sms.c)
