Sorry to hear this: https://www.theregister.com/2024/01/04/niklaus_wirth_obituary/ I started programming in Modula-2 back around ca. 1986 on an Atari-ST (TDI-Modula-2). It was quite a revelation after years of programming in Forth and C. I’m still using Modula-2 in some of my company’s products. Ben
Hi BenThank you for posting. I was not sure if this was the place to discuss such a thing. I've read it yesterday on HN and I was wondering if any of the bigger news outlets were going to cover it.
Some 20 years ago, I've had the opportunity to work on Modula-2 code conceived in the late 70's. Instead of compiling Modula-2 directly, we translated the code to C using Glance's (a Swiss company as well) M2CC to cover for the various build targets. Being a youngster, I've never heard of Modula-2 before, but the kind of setup opened a door to a whole new world. Yes, it was all supposed to be replaced by the New Hip Thing, but the code actually lives on and the software is still being used.
Many things I know today I'm pretty sure I only know because of Niklaus Wirth and Modula-2. So, yeah. It was very sad to hear he was gone.
Cheers nevertheless, J.
