Dear Micheal

Interesting and good to hear. Michael, can you please give me more details what this running accross means? Have you found a document that describes this extension? Any hints are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Andreas

Tricky business. Let me state a couple of things:

1) IEEE 754 floating point is only defined for single (32) and double precision (64) reals.
2) 128 bit long reals are not abundantly available and indeed, there might be performance penalties for using it

I had thought there were just 32- and 64-bit reals, too.  However today I ran across IEEE 754-2008 which also defines a 128-bit real.  I agree--they probably aren't widely implemented.
