If I may add... The process also works on Mint Mate 20. Just completed minutes 
ago.  All of the necessary building packages were available from the default 
repos except libgnomevfs2-dev. I added the deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu 
bionic universe repo and that provided libgnomevfs2-dev. ./configure; make; 
sudo make install worked just as expected.

For my next trick I will look through my notes and see if I can remember how to 
build a .deb package. This would allow installation of Gnome Commander on other 
machines without having the mixture of old and new repos and development tools 
installed on "production" machines - just in case there are any bad after 
effects.
