[GSoC][Introducing Myself]

Hi all,

As we all know GSoC orgs have been announced today, and I saw on the mailing list https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/freetype-devel/2023-02/msg00000.html that freetype applied as an organisation.

I can see on GSoCs website that, indeed, freetype is an accepted organization! Congratulations :)

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Kostya Farber. I am a data engineer, I work at Aviva and am based in London. I have a strong passion and love for software development and technology in general.

I have been coding for a while, and have recently gotten into open source too. I mainly deal with Python in the open source world and contribute mostly to scientific libraries (Pandas, Matplotlib etc.) I love it. I enjoy giving back to the community and helping move technology forward.

Here is my GitHub link for reference: https://github.com/kostyafarber - I have other personal projects I've done as well that you guys can check out if you'd like :)

I have been learning c for a while now, mostly writing systems programs in a Linux environment and generally writing small programs for fun. I want to further develop my skills in this area. The reason I am interested in this project particularly, is because I love fonts and typography. I have always dreamed of somehow being involved or contributing in this space, and I think this is a great opportunity to do so!

I am so obsessed with fonts, I had to get a custom one from the folks here for my website https://klim.co.nz/collections/founders-grotesk/. You can check out my website if you want to get to know more about me and my interests.

I am conscious that I do have a full time job, but seeing as Google has announced the opportunity for non-students and also this year to extend the project timeline to 22 weeks; I believe that I can manage the time required for a medium-sized project. Of course, this is up to the maintainers but I want to be upfront about this to manage expectations for both freetype and myself.

An aside, I didn't see it as a requirement to submit a small patch as I've seen on other orgs, is this a requirement here? I couldn't see anything on your GSoC page. Anyway I plan to go over the freetype tutorials and dive deeper into the codebase.

Sorry for the long-winded message, but I hope I've communicated a little bit about myself and my experience.

Regards,

Kostya
