As far as I can see, the stuff in the
directory `docs/reference/markdown' is the result of an intermediate
step and can thus be completely omitted, right?  The same appears to
be true for file `mkdocs.yml'.

Yes, the files in `docs/reference/site' are sufficient for the documentation

website. Markdown files and `mkdocs.yml' can be safely omitted in the

tarball.
