Separating rendering and hinting modes is a good idea.
I don't think there's a sensible way of stratifying hinting modes on a
continuous scale though and I'm not a fan of fontconfig's attempt
there. Natively hinted TTFs can look autohinter-light or like bitmaps,
depending on the instructions in the font. Autohinter-light and native
OTFs look almost the same. I suggest you do 3 separate states (off,
autohinter, native) and provide suboptions for those (warper, light
mode or interpreter version).
And v40 isn't really light until I figure out a reliable way to stop
fonts from clamping horizontal stems to pixel widths.
