I re-ran the new backend and by-pass the full validation. 3-week-old FreeType
is not happy with 16 of the 22; vs 4 of 22 with the old 1.0 MS proprietary
backend.
So 12 font files MS loads, 3-week-old FreeType does not. Werner made 3 changes
in the last few days, which presumably will fix some of the 12...

So yes, rather interestingly, the older FontVal 1.0 backend
from Microsoft is happy to read 18 of the 23 (18 = 29 - 6
(CFF) - 4 - 1 [24.ttc]), which is a lot happy than
FreeType's 4-9 of 23. the backend I was running is a heavily
patched derivative of

3 weeks' old freetype.
