Oh, regarding performance, I did some tests with `ftbench -b a times.ttf`.
git master, vanilla (v35): 6.300--6.500 us/op
git master, Infinality (v38): 20.500--20.700 us/op
git master, my patch, v35: 6.500--6.600 us/op
git master, my patch, v38: 6.500--6.700 us/op
I'd say the performance hit is acceptable.
