Sure, would be great to see what the ideas were.  But I don't think it can be
used as is, given that it was essentially a one-commit change in 2007 that has
never been used and bugfixed in real life.

David, maybe you remember what the main ideas were?

Please remove the undocumented hook hack at least.  It conflicts with the
FT_LOAD_COLOR flag.  That's the part that bothers me.
