I have used Lato Light and Lato Hairline for these new tests and will email you those 2 fonts for testing.

They are also freely available from http://www.google.com/webfonts/specimen/Lato

Is it possible that the solution is to tweak the prep code that

ttfautohint generates?

I have to investigate this.  It looks like a bug since the horizontal
stems don't appear extremely thin.  What's the font of the second
image on this page (`breeds Loneliness...')?  Can you send it to me or
give a link?
