The other possibility is that, with the older X/freetype, my DPI wasn't being
used and it was rendering at the default 72 (note I'm currently using the X
"freetype" module, not fontconfig). I don't know the gritty details of how X
does things. Of course it would be great if fonts would render beautifully at
all DPI's but I don't know if this is possible.
I think I may try switching back to fontconfig, which should allow me to
specify DPI directly, thus avoiding this nonsense :-)
