Indeed; it is simply a bug in Xft, and has not been fixed in any release.
I assume the application is passing an FT_Face object directly to Xft
instead of a file name; that would explain the crash quite nicely.
Please try the CVS version of Xft (from http://xlibs.freedesktop.org) and
see if it still crashes...
