Mea culpa, I used './configure CFLAGS=-fno-strict-aliasing' on the second test
which
basically removes -O2 ! The figures are now much less impressive, I only get a
1-2%
max performance hit without strict aliasing (actually barely enough to see
numbers are
all a little greater).
