The issue is actually with Dingbats.  Try:

        xfd -fa Dingbats

or, if you have Adobe's type1 version try:

        xfd -fa 'ITC Zapf Dingbats'

Only the space character gets displayed.

All of the rest (glyph names a1 through a206) are ignored.

The otf version I munged up, available at:

http://cloos.sixbit.org/fonts/dingbat/

works, but only because the glyph names are replaced by uniXXXX names
derived from the unicode charts.
