        It is maintained if the file is first "encoded" using something 
like MacBinary or BinHex (or even StuffIt).

        Also, with Mac OS X, there is now a .dfont format which is the 
resource fork of the font in the data fork so to avoid the problems of the 
above.  I don't believe, however, that FT2 has been updated to handle them yet.
