What about using libtool to do that?  Does it work sucessfully with
mingw, Cygnus, and Uwin?

If possible, the same library version used on Unix platforms should be
used on Windows also.  For FreeType 2.0.1, the library should contain
`libfreetype' and `6.0.1', e.g. libfreetype-6.0.1.{dll,lib}.
