Follow-up Comment #2:

With the attached tabulated file, ESPResSo gets a little further. However, now
it reports that it can't parse the tabular file. Since February, there is
basic error handling when reading tabulated files, but before there wasn't. 
Reading a not completely correctly formatted tabulated file could result in
undefined behavior at that time, and I assume that this was what caused the
problem.
Now I can't reproduce it anymore, so I'll mark it as closed.
If it reappears, please reopen the bug!
