it is (I added `backward-delete-char-untabify-method' long ago), but
only if your backspace is bound to `backward-delete-char-untabify'.

maybe this `hungry' thing should be removed from cc-mode?

I thought that the whole purpose of customize was to make customization
possible for those who do not know lisp.

IMO, adding customize to emacs was an unmitigated disaster, surpassed
only by adding MULE (BTW, does MULE finally support UTF8?)
