Because it *hides* both your input and the prompt, *while* you're
typing! If it's a prompt that requires a single letter input, then you
have to sit there and *wait* for the stupid thing to go away.
Sure, you can usually type a key to make the message go away, but it's
already interfered with your train of thought, and about 99% percent of
the time in my experience, the message is either totally irrelevant
(something else happened in the background that threw up a message), a
trivial error (e.g. "No further undo information"), or something
`informational' ("Loading foobar...done"), which certainly don't warrant
such an intrusion.
Basically it's just *supremely* annoying (I find it hard to believe you
don't think so).
