Follow-up Comment #5:

Thank you for the feedback. It is Windows that is detecting the presence of a
font called "denemo.ttf" and deciding to skip the instruction to install the
new version. As the font was last changed in 2012 this problem will hopefully
not bite many others.

Windows does also have a habit of continuing to believe files are in use when
they are not - so if you wish to delete a version of Denemo you cannot do so
after running and quitting it - you have to reboot to convince Window that you
are no longer using it.
