Hi,
after I posted ,
I saw that there is a LUA module for PHP in PECL 

http://pecl.php.net/package/lua

it is just starting out... 
so may be this will be my starting point
although C Invoke seems to allow quite a bit more
integration functionality after the initial complexity
'hump'
