Follow-up Comment #1:
xboard is graphical chessboard that can serve as a user interface front end to
various things including chess engines and chess servers. Generally you have
to provide command line options to tell it what back end you want to use with
it, although it is possible to configure it to do something by default when
giving no command line options. Please see the documentation, available from
http://www.gnu.org/software/xboard/.
I don't know what appcafe is, but evidently it didn't pre-configure xboard in
a way that makes it do something when you don't give any command line
options.
