OK, I have applied it to the XBoard development (=master) branch as well.
I am not sure if it makes sense to cherry-pick this patch into the v4.4.x
branch,
as we might never release from that again:
We are now preparing release of the master branch as 4.5.0, and declare it
the "current stable version". By now 4.4.x is so obsolete that it makes very
little sense to bring out a final patchlevel (4.4.5), as there has been no
reporting
of any major bugs.(I consider this currently reported problem with ~ really a
very minor one, as it occurs only when you entered input that would be invalid
in the first place.)
So we will likely just abandon the 4.4.x branch, and (hopefully) from December
on 4.5.x will be the official stable version.
