It's one of the hundreds of items on the wish list. I don't know if
anyone is planning to work on it. I agree that it's relatively important.

I suspect it's a bug in the chess engine you're using rather than
xboard. To pin it down, run xboard with the -debug flag, redirect
stderr to a file, reproduce the bug, and send the resulting log. Also
tell us what chess engine you're using.
