Follow-up Comment #3:

Deri's points in comment #1 are well-taken.  This is probably just me
misunderstanding things--but that means others may misunderstand it too, which
means our documentation could say more about this fairly esoteric request (and
the related `trf` _groff_ extension).

Maybe I can work on that once we're in code freeze for _groff_ 1.24.
