Follow-up Comment #1:
This is phrased the way it is because it is so early in the discussion. In
the node/section "Text" I am beginning at the beginning at trying to presume
as little prior knowledge as possible.
One problem with Ingo's suggestion is that we haven't even defined what
"escaping" is yet at that point in the chapter.
I know (some) people want a remanfuacture of CSTR #54, but that is not what
our Texinfo manual is supposed to be, and never has been.
groff(7) is slowly creeping in that direction.
I need to hear something more persuasive before switching narrative tack so
dramatically in this material.
