Follow-up Comment #1, bug #63214 (project groff):
I have a fix.
$ ./build/eqn EXPERIMENTS/hosed-eqn.roff > /dev/null
./build/eqn:EXPERIMENTS/hosed-eqn.roff:16: error: end of input while defining
macro
...that's much better.
