Usage of python on L*nux builds is a better experience (especially for
initial development, so had hoped you were not using MS Windows. The MS
Windows build (1.02.000) has a bug in it that renders part of the Python
interface unusable. So I was going to recommend using the latest and
greatest from cvs.

On Debian/Ubuntu you should be able to build it from sources using
information I had on the mailing list previously:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnubg/2011-06/msg00005.html

In that archived mailing list post the CVS repository has been partially
obscured. The CVS line should read:

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:address@hidden:/sources/gnubg co gnubg

Let me know if you are able to build it. I am recommending using the
latest and greatest as there have been a number of Python bug fixes over
the years. Using the latest doesn't improve the documentation unfortunately.

Once I have you at a reasonable starting point I'll be able to give you
some basic advice in a follow up post.
