It has something to do with the scrollbars in ubuntu. My workaround was: 1.) start from console with: LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 gnubg then you have permanent visible scrollbars in the docked windows.2.) change the application starter (/home/yourhome/.local/share/applications/gnubg.desktop) to:
[Desktop Entry] Categories=Game;BoardGame;GTK; Comment=GTK or console backgammon program with analysis Exec=env LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 gnubg -w GenericName=Backgammon Icon=gnubg Name=GNU Backgammon NoDisplay=false Terminal=false Type=Application there the line starting with Exec is essential. When I click a move in the analysis window after finishing a game my system freezes totally. (A very newly installed and totally upgraded Ubuntu 12.04). Moving between moves in the analysis window may be done with arrows in top of window, but it doesn’t work well and it’s very tiresome. The workaround I have used is to select the menubar and unselect (hit F10 twice) when this happens. I agree this is still a bit tiresome, though.
